What general dentistry covers
General dentistry is the ordinary, unglamorous work that decides how much of the other work you will ever need. It is the six-month appointment most people think of simply as “the check-up”, an examination, a professional cleaning, and the diagnostic imaging that reveals what the eye cannot, together with the preventive and periodontal treatments that protect teeth across a lifetime.
As a Stockton family dentist, we provide this care for every member of the family, at every age. The same practice that sees a nervous eight-year-old also sees their grandparents, and the continuity is the point.

Why six months, and what happens if you stretch it
The interval is not arbitrary. It reflects roughly how long it takes for plaque to mineralise into calculus that no amount of home brushing will shift, and how quickly decay can travel from the enamel surface toward the nerve.
Caught at the right moment, decay is a filling. Left long enough, the same tooth needs root canal therapy and a crown, or becomes an emergency at an inconvenient hour. Many expensive restoration procedures are avoidable when patients simply come in twice a year.
Patients with active periodontal disease are usually seen every three to four months instead, because the bacteria driving the disease recolonise gum pockets faster than a six-month interval allows.
The examination is broader than most people expect
A routine exam and cleaning is not only a hunt for cavities. Our hygienists evaluate the gums and bone for pockets and recession, check existing fillings and crowns for failing margins, and examine the facial area, tongue, mouth and throat for early signs of disease.
That soft-tissue check matters more than its brevity suggests. Oral cancer begins with an asymptomatic stage during which the usual warning signs are not noticeable, which is exactly why a dedicated oral cancer screening should be performed at least once a year rather than waiting for a symptom to appear.
Dental X-rays complete the picture, revealing decay between teeth, early bone loss, cysts, abscesses and impacted teeth. Modern shielding keeps exposure far below the dose involved in other medical imaging.
Prevention costs a fraction of repair
Two treatments do most of the preventive work, and both are quick, painless and inexpensive relative to what they prevent.
Dental sealants close off the deep grooves in the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where the overwhelming majority of childhood cavities begin because toothbrush bristles are simply too wide to reach in. Fluoride treatment works on the enamel itself, helping rebuild its mineral structure and making it more resistant to the acids that oral bacteria produce.
Both are applied routinely as part of pediatric care, and both remain worthwhile for adults at higher risk of decay, anyone with gum recession, a dry mouth from medication, or a history of frequent cavities.
Gum health is where teeth are actually lost
Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in the developed world. It is typically signalled by red, swollen, painful or bleeding gums, but in some cases produces no noticeable symptoms at all, which is why it is so often found first at a routine visit rather than by the patient.
Bleeding when you brush is a symptom, not a normal event. Gum disease treatment addresses gingivitis and periodontitis at every stage; where the infection has moved below the gumline, scaling and root planing removes the plaque and calculus feeding it.
Grinding and clenching cause a related kind of slow damage, worn and fractured teeth, receding gums, aching jaws and headaches. Bruxism treatment and night guards protect the teeth while the habit is managed.
When general care leads somewhere else
Not every problem is caught early. Where a tooth is already damaged or missing, general dentistry hands off to restorative treatment. Where the concern is appearance rather than health, cosmetic dentistry takes over. Where something happens suddenly, emergency care is the fastest route back to comfort.
