Dental trouble comes in stages
Tooth decay is a minor disaster, and among the easiest problems to cure, a filling restores a cavity for a very extended period, if not a lifetime. Put off or fail to recognise that cavity, and you move up the stages to more serious problems and the treatments that resolve them.
Understanding that progression is the single most useful thing on this page, because it explains why the same tooth can need three very different treatments depending only on when it is seen. A cavity found at a routine exam is a twenty-minute appointment. The same cavity found eighteen months later, after it has reached the nerve, is a root canal and a crown.

Saving the tooth comes first
Since the best tooth is truly the original, keeping it is almost always the first course of action, every treatment below exists to postpone or avoid an extraction.
Tooth-coloured fillings remove decay and rebuild the missing structure with composite that bonds to the tooth, which means less healthy structure has to be sacrificed to hold the repair in place.
Dental crowns take over when a tooth is too compromised for a filling, inlay or onlay. Where a filling replaces missing structure and relies on what remains to hold together, a crown covers the whole tooth and does that job itself.
Root canal therapy clears infection from inside the tooth so the natural tooth can stay in place. It is the treatment patients dread most and the one that most reliably prevents an extraction.
Replacing a tooth that is already gone
When a tooth cannot be saved, the gap itself becomes the problem. Neighbouring teeth drift into the space, the opposing tooth over-erupts, the bite changes, and the jawbone beneath the gap begins to recede, because bone is maintained by the forces transmitted through tooth roots.
That last point is why dental implants are described as the restorative gold standard rather than simply another option. An implant replaces the root as well as the visible tooth, and transmits chewing force into the bone the way a natural root does. Whenever possible, our Stockton dentists use implants to restore missing teeth.
Dental bridges span a gap using the teeth on either side for support. They are fixed, require no surgery, and are often the right answer where the neighbouring teeth already need crowns, but they do commit those teeth, which must be reduced to carry the bridge.
Dentures and partial dentures replace several teeth or a full arch. Modern dental technology has given them far more options than their reputation suggests, including attachment with implants so they snap in or snap on rather than relying on glues or springs.
Rebuilding the foundation first
Restorations need something solid beneath them. Where periodontal disease, extraction or trauma has cost you bone, that has to be addressed before implants become possible.
Bone grafting and ridge modification replace lost bone tissue and encourage natural regrowth, creating a stable base for implant placement and correcting the indentation in the jaw line that follows tooth loss.
Full mouth restoration
In some cases no single treatment resolves the problems with your teeth. A full mouth restoration uses a combination of the treatments above, staged in a deliberate order across a series of appointments, typically stabilising disease first, then rebuilding function, then addressing appearance.
Planning at that scale relies on good imaging. i-CAT® 3D scanning shows bone volume and nerve position in three dimensions, which matters when implants are part of the plan.
Preventing the next restoration
Every treatment on this page exists because something was not caught earlier. Routine exams and cleanings, regular X-rays and treatment of gum disease are what keep the list short. If you grind your teeth, addressing that protects the restorations you have already paid for.
If a tooth is painful or broken right now, do not wait for a routine appointment. See emergency dentistry or call (209) 951-3436. Otherwise, request an appointment online.
