James Van Sicklen, Jr. DDS | Stockton, CA Dentist
As a dentist, I often get asked about the best ways to maintain healthy teeth and gums. While regular brushing and flossing are important, there’s another key factor that is often overlooked: your diet. What you eat and drink can have a big impact on your oral health, and some foods are especially beneficial. In this post, I’ll share some of the top foods that I recommend to my patients for a healthy mouth.
1. Dairy Products: Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt are rich in calcium, which is essential for strong teeth and bones. They also contain casein, a protein that helps to neutralize acids in the mouth and prevent tooth decay.
2. Leafy Greens: Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and broccoli are packed with vitamins and minerals that are good for your overall health, but they’re especially beneficial for your teeth and gums. They contain calcium, vitamin C, and folic acid, which can help to prevent gum disease and promote healthy tooth enamel.
3. Crunchy Fruits & Vegetables: Fruits and vegetables that require a lot of chewing, like apples, carrots, and celery, can help to clean your teeth as you eat them. They also stimulate saliva production, which helps to neutralize acids in the mouth and wash away food particles.
3. Nuts & Seeds: Nuts and seeds are a great source of protein and healthy fats, but they’re also good for your teeth. They contain calcium and phosphorus, which can help to remineralize tooth enamel and keep your teeth strong.
4. Green and black tea: Green and black tea contain polyphenols, which are natural compounds that can help to prevent plaque buildup and reduce inflammation in the gums. Tea also contains fluoride, which can strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities.
While there’s no one “magic” food that will guarantee a healthy mouth, incorporating these foods into your diet can go a long way towards promoting good oral health. Of course, it’s also important to brush and floss regularly and to visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
